New Housing – Calton – Glasgow

Hypostyle Architects, Wheatley Group

It was good to be working with Hypostyle Architects, on this project in the East End of Glasgow. I hadn’t been in this area for a while and it’s great to see the change taking shape around the Barras Market, Gallowgate and Calton areas, to the East of Glasgow’s City Centre. Large swathes of vacant and derelict land being repurposed and developed for housing, cultural and community uses. This commission documents new housing from the first phase of 250 new homes built adjacent to the site of the B-listed meat market cattle sheds, a derelict landmark soon to be redeveloped as an enterprise and community development with City Deal funding.

At the heart of the masterplan for the housing is a diagonal route across the site, making a permanent feature from desire lines and an informal path, and setting a route through to Duke Street and the Collegelands student accommodation. The site addresses Gallowgate with six storey blocks set around a landscaped entrance to the site with a series of town houses and landscaped areas positioned at intervals along, and at either ends of the diagonal route; the taller blocks staggered to allow light into the quieter landscaped areas.
