Provand’s Lordship – Glasgow

John Gilbert Architects, Glasgow Life, AGM Stone, City Building Glasgow

Offering a view into medieval Glasgow, John Gilbert Architects have faithfully reestablished the building’s presence as part of extensive upgrades to future proof the building and collection. A new lime harling render which brings the building inline with how it originally looked as built in 1471 is the main visual change to the streetscape. Both internally and externally, upgrades to the structure establish a new era in the building’s life, and prevent damage from rising damp.

The upper floors house a stunning collection of watercolours by William Simpson bringing to life a Glasgow that once was, and more recent colourful depictions of Glasgow in the 1930s and 40’s as painted by Tom McGoran in the 1990s.

Working to photograph cultural assets like this is a joy. The care and attention in refurbishing the buildings needs to be reflected in the photos, and communication and research at the outset of a project, identifies key elements to capture, which is then coordinated with the timelines for completing a project.
