Another John Gilbert Architects led project that has focused on making healthy efficient homes, that are affordable to heat, whilst sensitively restoring the building and reconfiguring the layout of homes. With all the flats vacant, the opportunity arose to retrofit the entire building here and renovate the building fabric of the tenement block between party walls. A collaborative effort here between Southside Housing Association, contractor CCG, NBM cost consultants and University research teams creating a valuable prototype in thermally insulating, heating and ventilating these traditional and beautiful Scottish buildings.
Full of character, the ability to retrofit and future proof these Scottish tenement lined streets is becoming a critical chapter in their evolution, and making their preservation sustainable for future generations. It was a lovely challenge to photograph this project and to capture the qualities of Scottish tenements that are inherent in these typical urban streets of Glasgow, and to document a project that successfully addresses the future of the tenement. The project has picked up several awards including a Glasgow Institute of Architect award for sustainability.
