Glentrool Hive

John Gilbert Architects, Glentrool Community Trust, Broatch Construction Ltd

This conversion of a 1950’s primary school building into a fit for purpose community centre includes a multi function community hall, and gallery, with meeting, kitchen and ancillary space, plus an accommodation wing that can be let out to those wishing to explore the Galloway Forestry Park or surrounding areas. There was also a community garden taking shape when i visited to photograph the project, that was fostering social connections and producing their own fruit and vegetables as well as improving wellbeing and encouraging physical activity. As with many of the projects I have photographed for John Gilbert Architects, the energy efficiency and environmental upgrade measures including insulation to floors, walls and roof space, has significantly improved the performance and comfort of the building and enabled the community to strengthen initiatives with respect for their beautiful surroundings.
